Yesterday, my family and I decided instead of laying in the house like house cats we would do lunch and a movie at the Warren Theatre. After much discussion on what to see, I said in a firm voice…Let’s see The Help. Now you might be shocked that I would take my 9 year old daughter to a movie that was rated PG-13 but I did much research before going plus I had read the book. I felt like the lessons learned would be far greater than any inappropriate language.
I could not have been more right! My children sat quietly absorbing the history of a time that is rarely spoken about. Sure kids get Martin Luther King education but do they understand what that period in time was like. What it felt like to be a black family trying to make a living? Get an education? I know my children never had thought of those things till they saw it yesterday by watching The Help. Jackson got to see that status was created by fake means. Not by the character of the individuals~
After seeing the movie we had one of our most interesting days discussing what they had seen and learned. Caytie wanted to know why Skeeter was the only woman working? Why was her Mom so anxious for her to marry? She wanted to know, why those women were so mean to the new lady in town? Why Abilene and Minnie were payed so little if they were the “Mommies”? I love that my Caytie questions…I am thrilled that she got to see a movie with strong women making difficult choices and then prevailing in the end! Girls need to feel empowered! I want my Caytie to walk to the beat of her drum. Using her conscience as a guide and always striving for better.
In honor of this great movie, I decided to make a Ginger Peach Crumble for our dessert last night! I just have to tell you it was awesome. We sat together talking and scooping up warm rich spoonfuls of my crumble! Perfect ending to a superb day!
Ginger Peach Crumble
3 cups fresh peaches (can use frozen)
2 teaspoon candied ginger, chopped fine
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup old fashioned oatmeal
3/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla paste
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 stick unsalted butter, chilled and cut into pieces
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 8×8 baking pan. In a medium sized bowl, combine the peaches and candied ginger. Pour into baking dish.
In a medium sized bowl, combine the brown sugar, oatmeal, flour, cinnamon, vanilla paste, pecans and butter pieces. Using your hands work in the chilled buyer till small beads are formed. Place on top of peaches. Bake for 30-45 minutes till golden and bubbly! Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

I stumbled upon your Blog and find it a nice escape. Your family expedition to see “The Help” was very insightful, and very endearing. I had planned to see it. You seem like a delightful bright lady. Can’t wait to read more of your Blog. I need some lite fare today. The economic contraction is getting the best of me.
