Is your slow cooker the workhorse in your kitchen? Have you had it since you got married…20 years ago? Do you wish that your slow cooker would be a little more “presentable” yet you see no reason to trade her in for a new one? (see..my slow cooker is a “she”) Well, I have a way for you to give that cooker a facelift! Repaint it and then make it into a chalkboard where everyone knows what you are cooking without touching the lid! (BTW- THAT IS A HUGE NO NO AT MY HOUSE!)
Here is how you do it! So simple….I am searching garage sale now to rehab the cookers and give them for Christmas gifts to friends!
How to Rehab Your Old Slow Cooker
1 ugly slow cooker
course grade sandpaper
isopropyl alcohol
painters tape
chalkboard paint
Clean the exterior of your slow cooker the best you can with an SOS pad to remove any oil and debris.
Sand the exterior of the slow cooker to “rough up” the paint so the new paint can stick better.
Rub the outside of your slow cooker with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining oil or debris from the cooker.
Tape off any spots you do not want to get paint. (ie handles, knob, top and bottom metal rims)
Using a good polyester paint brush apply the chalkboard paint. Cover the slow cooker completely and allow it to dry two hours before applying another coat. Continue till you get the desired look you are wanting. Allow the paint to dry 48 hours before you write on it with chalk!
Beef and Barley Soup
1 pound stew meat, cubed
9 cups water
3 1/2 teaspoon beef soup base
1 onion, chopped
1 cup celery, chopped
1 cup shredded carrots
2 cups hash brown potatoes, shredded and thawed
1 1/2 barley
Brown the meat in a skillet till browned. Add the meat, water, soup base, onion, celery and carrots to the slow cooker bowl. Cook on High for 6 hours. Add in the hash browns and cook for one more hour and then add the barley and cook an additional hour. Serve!
