I am so excited that the Sunflower Farmers Market has come to Oklahoma City. Praise the executives who have finally realized that the residents of Oklahoma are craving fresh produce, meats and breads. The newest store is located at 63rd and N. May in Oklahoma City.
When you first walk in you will be greeted by fresh herbs and spices being sold at the front door and the wafting scent of fresh baked challah bread (which by the way makes the greatest French toast on the planet!). Sunflower Farmers Market also sells Boars Head Deli Meats, a wonderful selection of cheeses, a gourmet olive section, organically raised meats and a multitude of homemade sausages. If by some miracle you have not filled your cart you will then see the large supply of fresh fruits and vegetables! Best of all is Sunflower Farmers Market sells those hard to find gourmet selections such as endive, exotic mushrooms, patty pan squash, etc.
By far my biggest surprise was the amazing prices. I didn’t notice any price hike because of the great variety! Instead I found super stuff at excellent prices. For example I picked up huge Haas avocados for .99 a piece and the endive were buy one get one free!
But that wasn’t all! Sunflower Farmers Market also offers an excellent selection of sodas, frozen foods and even pre-prepared meals you don’t have to feel guilty about!
If you are on a special diet and need specialty items such as gluten free products you are in luck because Sunflower offers a HUGE selection of these specialty items!! You will simply be amazed. I was also very impressed at how knowledgeable the staff was about what they stock! They were so helpful when I had questions and even taught me a thing or two. I loved the fun fact that their incredible bottled lemonade is sweetened with beet juice! So surprised that I decided to buy two bottles and shock my kids!!
I came home and got right to work creating some new recipes with the great items I bought at Sunflower Farmers Market.
If you do not want to heat up the grill than I encourage you to invest in a Grill Pan! You will see all kinds out on the market right now but frankly my favorite is the tried and true Lodge Cast Iron Pan or the Caphalon brand! The Lodge looks like something you would use on a camping trip…not sexy or fancy but let me tell you it is the best. And it will last a century!
Now if you want a sexier version of the Lodge it would be the Caphalon glazed cast iron! Pick your color!!!
Grilled Citrus Glazed Chicken with Carribean Salsa
4 boneless skinless chicken breast (can use thighs)
3 roasted garlic cloves, pressed
1 tablespoon herbes de provence
1/4 cup agave nectar
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon ground dried chipolte chile
1 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed
2 mangoes, chopped
1/4 cup red pepper, chopped
1/2 cup chopped pineapple
1/2 cup red pepper, chopped
1/4 cup cilantro
salt/pepper
jalapeño, chopped (optional)
In a small bowl, mix together the garlic cloves, herbs de Provence, agave nectar, sea salt, chipolte chile powder and orange juice. Using a large Ziploc bag, place chicken breasts inside and pour marinade over the top. Allow to sit in fridge for 5 hours to marinate.
Heat bbq till hot or use a grill pan on your stove top. Place chicken breasts on hot surface and cook till juices run clear. While chicken is cooking, use a medium sized bowl and combine mango, red pepper, pineapple, red peppers, cilantro and salt/pepper. Place chicken on a platter and top with Caribbean salsa.
Coconut Rice
2 cups jasmine rice
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup coconut milk
1 teaspoon salt
Rinse and drain rice in cold water. Place in a saucepan with water, coconut milk, and salt. Place the pot over high heat and bring liquid to a boil. Stir and reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cover the pot tightly. Continue cooking for 15 minutes.
Remove the pot from the heat and let stand 10 minutes, covered. Fluff with fork and serve.
Almond Cream Sodas
1 bottle of soda water, chilled
1 cup almond milk, chilled
2 Tbsp. agave nectar
vanilla bean ice cream or frozen yogurt
Place 2 Tbsp. agave nectar in a tall glass. Add in 1/2 cup almond milk and stir. Fill glass with soda water and top with ice cream! Enjoy!

Loved seeing your cooking ideas on channel 9 this afternoon. Went right to your website to get the recipes but didn’t find the one for those little squash you were cooking. Can’t even remember what they were called but you got them at the sunflower market you said. Loved it all!
Caryn Ross says
They are called patty pan squash. I sautéed them in a little bit of Kerry Gold herbed butter (my favorite herbed butter…) and they sell that there too! Thank you for tuning in!

I make my granddaughter’s baby food, so I would like to find a variety of fresh produce at reasonable prices. I really enjoy your segments on News 9 @ 4:00.

Cathy-
You will love the amazing selection of fresh fruits and veggies for your granddaughter! Just a tip…my kids loved homemade chicken and noodles when they were first introduced to food. Would freeze the leftovers in ice cube trays. Easy to pop out and warm for my babies dinner! Thank you for tuning in!

I just visited the Sunflower Market this weekend and (despite the enormous crowd) I was SO excited to see quality healthy food for great prices! The corn on the cob was 8 for a dollar for cryin’ out loud. AND on Wednesdays, their weekly sales overlap so you can get the great deals from the past week and the current week all in one shopping trip.

I now officially “like” you on facebook 🙂

Am very excited that Sunflower Market is open and within a reasonable distance for my grocery shopping! Have been several times already. Produce is beautiful, fresh and delicious; great variety of “exotic/unusual for Oklahoma” produce and other items; staff is very welcoming; and prices for what I’ve bought are equal or less than comparable items elswhere! Enjoy watching you on Channel 9 and always like to find new tried and true recipes. I do not tweet or participate in facebook. Your web site is great to visit and easy to manipulate for those of us not wishing to participate in any other advanced tecnology linkages.

I’ve never been there, but I’d LOVE to go, with a gift card! LOL! 😀 Gonna try your cinnamon roll recipe soon btw!

Hi!
Thought you would like to know that gnocchi is pronounced nyo-key. I grew up on the stuff in a community that was largely Italian.
Enjoyed you on channel 9 today!
