Do you remember your first OU vs. Texas weekend? Mine came when I was 20 and my fiancee Jack and I pooled our money together and made the trek to the Big D.
Football has always been a big deal in Jack’s family.
You see, when Jack was growing up his mom made the annual OU/ Texas weekend a big deal for him. It was right up there with Christmas in the Ross house. As a single mom Barbara would save extra money throughout the year so she could pay for them to stay downtown, eat Mexican food and then go to the game. As she relays the story, she was trying to do “boy” things with her son.
Fast forward thirty years and now its Jack and I making the trip with our family as he tells the stories of his glory years with his Mom.
But, I know all too well that not everyone can make it to the big game which inspired me to help you bring the big game feel to your home! The best part about your meal is that you will not have to buy tickets, your meal will be guaranteed yummy, and best of all you will not be crammed in a tiny seat to watch the game.
My first and only stop to outfit my Boomer Sooner table is Thompson Pool and Patio in Norman. It is located at 2400 24th Ave SW in Norman just south of Lindsay on 24th. But, I know what you are thinking…”A pool Store?” Yes indeedy! Thompson’s is a great family owned business which has been a part of Norman life for over 30 years! Laura, one of the owners, takes great pride in going to market each year and finding the latest and greatest OU gear, OU tailgating games, OU table settings and best of all she even has incredible patio furniture! You really have to go and see everything they offer.
The best part about visiting a family-owned business over a big-market box store is that you are only a stranger once! After that they will call you by name and bend over backwards to help you anyway they can! Now that is what I call service!
I love Chuck-o!! If you love a good game while tailgating then check out their OU tailgating games!!

Now we need to talk about one of the biggest parts of celebrating any football game. THE FOOD!!
Here are a few of my favorites to serve for the big game!
Bevo Meatball Sandwiches
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground pork
- 4 slices of french bread, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup half and half
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 onion, chopped fine
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley
- 2 jars of spaghetti sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 6 french bread hoagies
- 6 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- In a small bowl place bread cubes. Pour milk over the bread. Set aside.
- Using a medium sized sauce pan, saute onion and garlic in olive oil over medium heat. Cook till onion is translucent. remove from heat and allow to cool.
- In a Medium sized bowl, combine ground beef and ground pork. Add in sea salt and pepper. Stir in sauteed onions mixture. Mix all of this together. I like to use my hands since that seems to combine everything best. Add in bread and milk. Mix into meat mixture. Add in parmesan cheese, parsley and eggs. Mix till combined.
- Using large cookie scoop scoop out meatballs and place in a hot skillet with olive oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides and then place in a slow cooker. Pour spaghetti sauce and beef broth over the meatballs. Cook on High for 3 hours.
- To serve place 3 meatballs on a french bread hoagie. Top with provolone cheese.
Ok, now I am going to share my #1 requested recipe. This is pretty much the best dip on the planet. It got its name at a tailgate years ago when after a few to many cool ones one of the guys said “eating this dip is gonna make mine bigger than your butt.” So, it is called Bigger Than Your Butt Dip! Not classy but delicious! As if the name is not enough I now make this in the shape of a football for tailgates. So this version today is called, Big Butt Football Dip! Did you love the platter I served this on….Well once again Thompson comes to the rescue with a line of fabulous products that will keep your food chilled while you watch the game or before when you are tailgating! I love this line of Chilled Bowls!! Go check them out!
